Golden Bantam 12 Row

Heirloom 1922

  • 80 Days, 7’ Stalk, 10-14 Rows
  • 7” ear height
  • Introduced in 1922 by Everett B Clark Seed company GB-12-Row is an improved variety
  • This strain was developed through selective breeding of the GB-8-Row
  • It’s ears are longer at 7” and thicker with 10–14 rows of kernels
  • Stalks are not as neat and compact at 7’ tall, but you can still expect 2 ears per plant
  • Whether you prefer the more compact 8 row or the larger 12 row, pick these as close to meal time as possible, prepare and enjoy a true heritage meal with the flavors that were on American kitchen tables 100 years ago

Golden Bantam 8 Row

Heirloom 1902

  • 80 Days, 5’ Stalk, 8 Rows
  • 5” ear height
  • Bred during the 1890’s by William Chambers to be small and fit neatly into a sidedish at the roadside inns where he sold his specialty corn
  • Introduced in 1902 by W. Altee Burpee GB-8-Row skyrocketed yellow “sugar” corn onto the American table
  • Before GB-8-Row, yellow corn was considered fit only to be fed to the livestock and white corn was for the table
  • Bantam was a sweet juicy little package of delectability though, that produced two ears for your table on each neat compact 5’ stalk
  • It was easy to grow, looked tidy in your garden and graced your table with tasty goodness
  • Golden Bantam remained the most popular sweet corn for the next three decades until the release of Golden Cross Bantam Hybrid in 1934

  • This corn has an exceptionally tight husk for increased pest resistance and grows well in poor soils

  • Tolerant of heat
  • Large vigorous corn
  • Widespread in the South
  • Dual purpose corn sometimes referred to as Mule Corn, because you grew it for yourself and your mule
  • Makes an excellent roasting ear, canned or frozen, cream corn, or fried corn at milk stage
  • Makes a better cream corn than modern hybrids

Country Gentleman

Heirloom - 1890

  • 96 Days, 8’ Stalk
  • 7” ear height
  • Creamy white shoepeg corn
  • Kernels zig and zag all over the cob with no regard to rows
  • Shoepeg speaks to the kernel shape which is deep and narrow like a wooden shoe peg from the 19th century
  • Tender and slender with a longer roasting ear window than most heirlooms
  • Productive and multi-tillered with two ears, in fertile soil it can produce three large plants, so space 18-24” apart
  • Deep, deep kernels make it an excellent processing corn for your canning and freezing
  • Still used commercially for cream corn
  • Also has high resistance to Smut for a non-hybrid sweet corn
