Pollinating Bumblebee Hives
The use of bees as pollinators in the greenhouse keeps growing steadily. The pollination process is labor intensive and cost prohibitive. That’s where commercially produced bees come in: our bumblebee hives are designed exclusively for crop pollination. Not just for tomatoes, but other crops as well: peppers, cucurbits, berries, and many other crops in need of primary or supplemental pollinators. By using bumblebee hives, growers can expect improved fruit quality and increased productivity.
Growers should use bumblebees shortly after the first flowers appear. Normal greenhouse conditions can support the hive, but excessively high or low temps may hamper activity. Hives must be placed above the ground, in a vibration-free place (away from fans, etc), where they will be sheltered from irrigation water and traffic (a plywood board over the top works well), yet open from all angles. Place on 2 cinder blocks and in such a way that ants cannot access it, by applying a sticky trap compound to the blocks. Upon receipt of the hive, don’t open the hive doors until the bees inside settle down.
The hive is constructed of cardboard and plastic and comes with its own food source. The hive is completely self-contained.
Treats 5-10,000 sq ft for 10-12 weeks
Important: Bombus spp. can sting you. If you are or may be allergic to bee stings, do not use bees for pollination.
This 5.5×8.5 inch laminated sign is useful to warn people that bees are in use — in case they are hypersensitive to strings or just scared of bees.
