March 2016 Newsletter (vol.42)   >>   Save Time & Money!

It looks like it is going to be a strong spring selling season. This time of year is when plug production and transplanting is in full motion. Often times plug trays look fine and appear to have no issues. This can lead to a false sense of security and set the stage for disease issues later on in finish.

Consider saving time and money by making sure your plants are moving through this stage of growth with protection. The concept is simple: Treat your plug trays or rooted cutting trays before transplanting using a bio-protective fungicide/bactericide.

OHP recommends their new Bio Fungicide Triathlon® BA.

Triathlon BA acts to protect your plants in a number of ways:

  • As a sprench the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens cells colonize the plug root zone and prevents establishment of diseases such as Pythium or Phytophthora.
  • As the plant or plugs grow, the active beneficials in Triathlon BA grow along with the roots.
  • Triathlon BA also protects against foliar diseases establishing on the leaf surface.
  • Triathlon BA contains lipopeptides which act as a biocide to kill existing fungal spores and bacterial cells. The Triathlon BA spores then germinate and become established on plants surfaces to prevent infection.
  • Triathlon BA protects your new plants in this critical stage when plants are naturally susceptible to stress from the planting operation

Triathlon BA is easy to apply. The common foliar rate is 2 quarts per 100 gallons ,19 mL per gallon or approximately 4 teaspoons per gallon of water.

Simply treat your plugs or cuttings with a coarse spray, wait four hours until the spray has dried and plant at your convenience. You should expect 1 to 2 weeks of protection.

Triathlon BA is also an excellent product to include in your fungicide rotation program and it is compatible with most insecticides and with other fungicides. Also, since it complied with USDA-NOP standards for organic production, you can use Triathlon BA over your entire range of crops including vegetables and herbs.
