The popularity of organic gardening is on the rise. But organic gardening is not a new concept; it has been practiced for over 10,000 years. At the beginning of agriculture, there were no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers to use on crops; therefore, they were organic gardens by default. Fast forward to the present, and there are seemingly endless supplies of chemicals to be used on crops. How do you know which are considered organic?
Look for products with the OMRI symbol. OMRI stands for Organic Materials Review Institute. Founded in 1997, OMRI is a national nonprofit organization that determines which products are allowed for use in organic production and processing. OMRI listed (approved) products may be used on operations that are certified organic under the USDA National Organic Program. Hummert International carries a full arsenal of OMRI approved chemicals. See a full listing below.
Just because a product does not have the OMRI certification, does not necessarily mean that it is not organic. Not every organic product on the market has gone through the process of having their product certified and listed by the OMRI, due to the expense or stringent guidelines. It might be a bit more challenging to find these products, but Hummert International carries many of these items including Dyna Mix Raised Bed Soil, Chick Magic Fertilizer, Soil Mender products and Espoma products and many more.
As organic gardening continues to grow in popularity, the demand for OMRI approved products will continue to increase. The current list is at 2500 products and growing. Using organic products for the home garden is a great idea for you as well as for the environment. Organic gardening is the way of the future!
