Hummert International History
Hummert International is a commercial distributor of horticultural supplies and equipment. The company was started in 1932 by August H. Hummert Sr. who provided seeds and supplies to St. Louis area florists, professional gardeners and vegetable growers. The business grew gradually through World War II. After the war, A.H. (Gus) Hummert, Jr. joined his father in the business. August H. (Sonny) Hummert III came to work with his father and grandfather in 1961 and became the company's current president upon the death of his father in 1970. His brother, Pete Hummert, came to the company in 1980 after receiving his degree in horticulture from the University of Missouri.
The company's identity in the past 25 years has been established by its comprehensive supply catalog and by its attention to customer service. Starting with a 16-page pamphlet in 1935, the Hummert horticultural supply catalog has expanded to more than 688 pages printed in full color. The catalog has become an industry standard for the presentation of products to customers and has identified Hummert International as a complete source for thousands of products. Other publications currently produced by the company include the Plants and Cuttings Catalog, Hummert's Monthly, Hummert's Helpful Hints, and a number of other seasonal price lists for things such as flowering bulbs, grass seed and vegetable seed.
Hummert International has customers in all 50 states and in more than 70 foreign countries. Hummert International maintains a large inventory of over 32,000 products and continually looks for excellent products to provide to the horticultural market. Utilizing an on-line order entry service, customers' orders can be shipped within one business day,and many times, on the same day.
Most of the people employed at Hummert International are horticulturally trained or have lifelong horticultural experience. The combined talents of all these people work together to present the many products that are offered and to perform the many services that are rendered.
